Pop Culture

Music is abundant in today's society. Many things in society and media are centered around music. Because music has such a following, it is easier for musicians to raise awareness on troubling issues. Farm Aid is a non profit organization started in 1985. Founders Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, and Neil Young had one goal when starting Farm Aid. They wanted to raise awareness about family farms being lost or taken away as larger farms moved in and were farming larger areas for cheaper prices.

Farm Aid is the longest running "benefit concert." This fact alone shows what power is present when music is used to raise awareness on important issues in society. People were able to learn about families losing their farms and what they could do to help. Through the combined effort of the music followers, more than $39 million has been raised in the past 26 years to help families keep their farms.

The founders and supporters of Farm Aid keep me believing that with the right amount of effort, anyone can make a difference in the lives of many. The first time I heard about Farm Aid I was amazed at the goals of everyone involved and their courtesy.
