Two out of three people suffer from depression. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people. People often see depresion as a sign of weakness and turn a blind eye to those who are suffering. What began as an attempt to tell a friend's story turned into a world changing movement. To Write Love on Her Arms (TWOLA) started in 2006 by people trying to help their friend. She was in need of rehabilitation and in order to pay for it they sold T-shirts. This opened an eye in the public that had been closed for a long time. "Her arms remember razor blades, fifty scars that speak of self-inflicted wounds." TWOLA set out to tell Renee's story and ended up changing the lives of people all over the world. This has greatly impacted my life since I have struggled with depression the majority of my life. It is important to seek help when you are down and to know that you are never alone. I think it is important to help those who are suffereing. Humans are naturally filled with emotions but, often lack the ability to show compassion; which, I think is what the world needs most. We need to be there for those in need and help those who are suffering from depression, addiction, self-injury, and the like. "We are only asked to love, to offer hope to the many hopeless." Without my loved ones and those who had hoped for me I do not kow where I would be today. TWOLA is truly inspiring and I hope to help with organizations like this in my future.
